Isolate the system

Nov 14, 2020

Hydraulic (Valve Actuators, Presses)

Identify system to be isolated.

Isolate the system.

Release pressure to reach zero energy state.

Fluids and Gases (Piping Systems, Vessels, Production/Process Equipment, and Storage Tanks, Etc.)

Identify system to be isolated.

Isolate all inlet and outlet piping by disconnecting pipes, inserting blinds, or use of double block and bleed.  Release pressure to reach zero energy state.  Note:  double block and bleed is not acceptable for confined space entry.

Use lockout valves, chains, or lockout devices with padlocks to lockout energy source.

Routine Operations

The lockout/ tagout procedure does not necessarily apply to minor tool adjustments and servicing activities that are routine, repetitive and integral to the production operations.

The following are not routine operations;

sight glass removal/installation

replacing valves in reciprocating compressors and pumps,

removing/replacing instruments and pressure , level, temperature gauges etc,

change out of relief device being serviced , remove /install safety valves

Remove motor and pump being serviced.

Note:  hot work or welding is not considered routine maintenance.
